2012 Phil-Am Christmas Caroling Event Report

A handful of volunteers came together to share the Christmas spirit with the senior residents of Provision Community Living in Hermitage, TN. The Phil-Am Association of Middle Tennessee was well represented by its dedicated members whose goal and mission in life is to serve God and its people not only those that can come and grace our parties and picnics, but also those that are placed in a home away from home and mostly forgotten and taken for granted. The bad weather (raining and cold) did not dampen our spirit to support this great cause initiated by the PAAMT president, Albert Go.The experience we've had was exhilarating  knowing deep in our heart and soul that these seniors, who are living on their own away from their family, for one night, were remembered, serenaded with songs they used to know and sing and showered with love and attention! Considering that most of us were not gifted with good voice and we only practiced for one evening, we were able to harmonized and sung in unison and put a smile on our audiences' faces!

Simbang Gabi Dates Announced

Dear friends,
We would like to bring a piece of the Philippine Christmas tradition here in Middle Tennessee. Through the initiative of the members of the Filipino Catholic Community, with support from the Philippine-American Associations throughout Tennessee, and best of all - by Father Tommy Joseph, we will be hosting and commissioning the first "Simbang Gabi" celebration at St. Joseph Church in Madison, Tn from December 16, 2012 to December 24,2012. To understand the importance and meaning this event holds for Tennessee's Filipino community and others who have come to cherish it, the history of Simbang Gabi must first be known.

In the 17th century, many Filipinos were fishermen or farmers who rose or ended their days with the dawn. To avoid the intense heat of mid-day, other laborers also began adhering to a schedule which began with the rooster’s call at crack of dawn. Due to the work schedules of the Filipino people, missionaries realized the best time to gather people together was at dawn. It was then that the missionaries introduced the devotion to the Virgin Mary, which takes place the nine days leading up to Christmas, to the Philippines. Since Mass began as early as 4:00 a.m. during these nine days, the Masses became known as the "Misa de Gallo", Spanish for Mass of the rooster. Other names associated with these Masses are "Misa de Aguinaldo", Spanish for Mass of the gift, or the "Simbang Gabi", Filipino for night Mass.

The Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi became a Filipino spiritual tradition thereafter. Vatican II encouraged the church in the Philippines to continue the tradition and uphold its significant role in the life of the people. Over the years, Simbang Gabi became a religious celebration infused with Filipino customs and food. Celebrated as a novena, nine successive days of devotion and prayer, it began on Dec. 16 and ended on Dec. 24. The Masses, which also signified the anticipation of Christ’s coming, started at dawn with church bells or Christmas carols announcing the impending services. Since it was typically dark when the churchgoers walked to Mass, people hung parols, colorful star-like lanterns made of paper and bamboo to represent the Star of Bethlehem, in their windows. Others set up belens, nativity scenes to commemorate the journey that ended with Jesus’ birth in a manger.

Once at Mass, the parishioners celebrated the liturgy with special readings, prayers, chants and panuluyan, a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph trying to find an inn for the birth of Jesus. After Mass, more festivities ensued with traditional food and drink. Delicacies such as bibingka (rice, flour and egg-based cake), puto (rice cakes), puto bungbong (steamed, purple sticky rice), sumansa pasko, suman sa ibos, hot pandesal (breakfast roll), salabat (hot ginger tea), tsokolate (hot cocoa) and coffee were set out for all to enjoy.
In traditional communities of the Philippines, Simbang Gabi has not been altered. In certain areas, however, the Mass times have been changed to accommodate the schedules of a new generation. This is also true of celebrations in the United States. Though Filipinos brought the tradition of Simbang Gabi with them, the celebrations have been slightly modified to fit in with the schedules of modern daily life in the United States.
The Tennessee Filipino Catholic Ministry's Simbang Gabi celebrations will be no exception. The dawn Masses will be replaced with nine evening services. The schedule of Masses are listed on the bottom of this page. Fr. Tommy will be our celebrant. After each Mass, we will have fellowship gathering, wherein, traditional Filipino dishes will be served and shared by all potluck style.

Though the festivities have been slightly altered, the intent is still the same. Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike will gather to experience a piece of the past, but more importantly, to mentally and spiritually prepare for the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Simbang Gabi is a wonderful opportunity to help us prepare for and wait with Mary in prayerful anticipation of the birth of her son Jesus Christ. Community leaders in other parts of the world say, that Simbang Gabi has opened doors for unity and spirituality among Filipino Americans and has kept Filipino culture alive. We also strongly believe that by bringing in Simbang Gabi to our church will be an effective way to build a community faith. People from different countries who has the same practices will join, come together and worship as one and bring along other members of the community church who are interested in learning these Christmas tradition. As we expand, we are looking forward to including other churches around us.

We are all anxious to begin this tradition in our community and we are inviting all of you to come, join us and support us. Bring your favorite Filipino dish to share for our fellowship gathering after each mass. We need ushers, lectors, liturgical ministers, singers, altar servers, and sponsors and any help/ideas to make this successful.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE SIMBANG GABI SCHEDULE:
Dec. 16 - Sun. 7:00pm
Dec. 17 - Mon. 7:00pm
Dec. 18 - Tue. 8:15pm
Dec. 19 - Wed. 6:30pm

The Philippine-American Association of Middle Tennessee is saddened by the passing of Marylou Go. Below is a video slideshow tribute to Marylou Go, devoted wife, mother and friend. She was known as a kindhearted and generous woman who was talented in singing and playing the piano. She loved to cook and entertain. She was also a hard worker and was a valuable asset to those she worked for. She has touched the lives of many people and would like to be remembered as someone who would bring people together in fellowship, educating people about her Filipino culture and loving others as she did her own family. Happy Fourth of July

Happy 4th of July! Have a safe and happy Independence Day from the officers of the Philippine-American Association of Middle Tennessee!

Happy Filipino-American Friendship Day/Philippine Republic Day

Philippine Republic Day, July 4, (also known as Filipino-American Friendship Day) is a day in the Philippines designated to commemorate the official recognition of Philippine independence by the United States of America.

The Philippines was a U.S. territory from 1898 to 1946. Between 1941 and 1946, during World War II Japanese occupation, it remained a U.S. territory with a government in exile headed by Manuel Quezon initially located in Australia and later in the United States. A campaign to retake the country began in October 1944, when General Douglas McArthur landed in Leyte along with Sergio Osmena who had assumed the Philippine presidency after Quezon's death. The battles entailed long fierce fighting; some of the Japanese continued to fight until the official surrender of the Empire of Japan on September 2, 1945. The country gained complete independence on July 4, 1946. Initially, the nation's Independence Day holiday (Araw ng Kalayaan) was held on July 4. Former President Diosdado Macapagal moved it to June 12, the date on which the Malolos Republic had declared independence from Spain in 1898. Philippine Republic Day was created in its place, and it coincides with the United States's Independence Day on July 4.

A Message from the President

May & June have been busy for everybody, hard work but fun. A volunteer organization like ours requires help from everybody to be successful.

How often do we have a chance to show our cultural exhibits and share our costumes to our members and to others? Asian Pacific Islander Celebration sponsored by the Veterans Hospital both Nashville and Murfreesboro has selected Philippines as their featured country. The organization has been invited thru Ms. Irene Cepnio by having some Philippine exhibits and fashion show of Philippine costumes. With our mission of preserving and promoting our cultures and traditions, we took advantage of the opportunity. Our exhibits were limited but what we have significant meaning to our heritage. All that had seen our exhibits during the Celebration was very appreciative and remember their life in the Philippines especially the veterans who served during the war. The fashion show was also as exciting as the exhibits. Phil-Am Association from Columbia and Murfreesboro also participated in the celebration by providing the entertainment, music, folk dancing and food. The combined efforts of all the Phil-Am Association in Middle Tennessee shows how unified the Filipinos in the Nashville and suburban area.

June 2nd, PAAMT co-sponsored the International Friendship dinner with International Ministry of St. Stephen Catholic Community. Seven other country participated in the event and was well received by both the Filipino community and the St. Stephen parishioners. Different ethnic menu were served, music was provided by Sally Pledger, Philippine food: appetizers, main menu and deserts were donated by so many Filipino families. Thanks to Marylou Go, Johnny & Cora Villanueva, Willie & Irene Cepnio, Ed & Flor Pattawi ; Pete & Juliet Galvez; John & Cecile and Bong & Monina De Jesus. Their initiatives and helping hand makes the entire event successful. Everybody had a positive and favorable remarks of the evening.

Membership in our association is slowly increasing but not to my expectation. If you know of anybody who has not joined our association, encourage them to join now. Membership is one of the key element to success. Education is one of the goal I set up this year. This summer, we are going to sponsor free classes to all teens/youth who may be interested in learning Philippine cultures, traditions, geography and language. Ana Arnone has volunteered to teach the six week classes and it will be a Saturday morning session. Anybody who may be interested may contact Ms. Arnone at 615-769-5798 or may contact me at 615-275-8805. First come first serve, limited seating only, so call now. Plan for Senior citizens and Youth programs are being initiated right now but we want to know who you are. Call Myrna Manalac at 615-758-9480 if you are a senior citizen or if you know somebody and if you are a teen/youth, call Ina Flores at 615-758-0644. We need you name, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. We have a website, check it out for future events and news “philammidtn.com”. If you have any information or news to share, let us know. If you have any suggestions or new ideas, call us.

Happy Philippine Independence Day

Independence Day (Filipino: Araw ng Kasarinlan; also Araw ng Kalayaan, lit. "Day of Freedom") is an annual national holiday in the Philippines observed on 12 June, commemorating the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain on 12 June 1898. It is the country's National Day.

The declaration of Philippine independence from the Spanish colonial rule followed the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896. Philippine independence was not recognised either by the United States of America or by Spain. The Spanish government later ceded the Philippine archipelago to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris. The Philippine Revolutionary Government did not recognize the treaty. When the Americans sought to execute the terms of the treaty, a three-year conflict, now called the Philippine-American War, ensued. The US granted independence to the Philippines on 4 July 1946 through the Treaty of Manila 4 July, the date intentionally chosen by the United States because it corresponds to its Independence Day, was observed in the Philippines as Independence Day until 1962. On 12 May 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal issued Presidential Proclamation No. 28, which declared Tuesday, 12 June a special public holiday throughout the Philippines, "... in commemoration of our people's declaration of their inherent and inalienable right to freedom and independence." On 4 August 1964, Republic Act No. 4166 renamed the 4 July holiday as "Philippine Republic Day", proclaimed 12 June as "Philippine Independence Day", and enjoined all citizens of the Philippines to observe the latter with befitting rites. Prior to 1964, 12 June had been observed as Flag Day, which was moved to 28 May (the date the Philippine Flag was first flown in battle).

A Message from the President...

Spring has arrived and our Association is moving forward in a positive way. I just completed filling positions for the different committees and I have directed all committee directors to come up with plans or activities for the year  so that we can schedule them properly and incorporate their budget for our year financial plan.

Our social Committee headed by our Past President, Juliet Galvez, has announced her plan for the year. The first event is scheduled April 22nd for our Spring Get-Together to be held St. Stephen. The main purpose of this event is to get everybody together, report to the membership our plan for the year, welcome the newcomers and solicit input or ideas from the members. Membership is one of the pillar of our organization and thru members involvement will we succeed.

As we focus on Cultural program, folk dancing,  folk songs and exhibits are things we are considering. We are looking for some volunteers to help get started with our program, young and adults as dancers. We are going to start with few selected dances that we can feature at our upcoming social events. We are also going to form a choir to sing popular Filipino folk songs. We already have few exhibits that we can showcase during the Cultural Shows but we need more.

Education to learn Philippine customs, traditions, history, geography and language will start this summer. The program will start during school summer vacation, 6 – 8 weekend classes, place TBD. Minimum registration fee will be charge to cover materials, place rental and refreshments for all attendees. Interested may contact any officers at (615) 275-8805.

Everything we are planning to do requires some funding and it is important that we get all members get involved in our program. We will  sponsor fund raising and get you all to participate, not only to help our association but also to have fun. We will also solicit advertisers for our Quarterly Newsletters and Website. Interested in making donations or advertising, please contact any officers or send it to P. O. Box 8057, Hermitage, TN 37076.

A Message from the President...

Happy New Year to all.

New Year means new beginnings. This year, aside from the responsibilities of the officers, I have assigned each of them to oversee the different committees to allow us to function and operate efficiently and orderly. This will eliminate any confusion and duplication of effort. Another thing we have done is launch our new website www.philammidtn.org (also at www.philammidtn.com).

As I mentioned in our last Christmas party, the only way we will be successful this year is to get our membership up and encourage all our members to get involved in our programs. I know that every member has their own special skills and we would like you to get involved and become a volunteer. This year we are focusing on cultural programs, community involvement, educational programs on culture and traditions, history and language and increased membership.

I am excited to be working with you and with our new officers. We are looking forward to a successful year and at the same time having fun. I am hoping you will spread the word and join our team. As a team there are no bounds to what we can accomplish.

Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success.

It takes people like you to make this organization thrive. If we are divided, the chance of failure is high. Let us move forward together to attain our goals and success will take care of itself.

We need your feedback to better serve our community and our organization. Please contact any officers for your suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Alberto Go
