Nashville's Philippine Typhoon Relief Aid Benefit Concert 11/30

Middle Tennesseans are rallying to raise funds and relief aids for the devastated central Philippines that was stuck by Haiyan, one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded. The destruction has left nearly 200,000 people homeless and in desperate need of food, water, medicine and other basic necessities.

A Philippine Typhoon Relief Aid Benefit Concert will be held at Saint Joseph Church/School, Madison, TN on 11/30/2013 at 7 p.m. will be featuring performances from youth dancers, as well as a number of musical performances.

Tickets are $30/adult and $75/family and proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross and will be available by calling Irene Cepnio at (615) 500-5428 or John Dy (615) 275-8806.

Filipino Lead Singer Arnel Pineda to Support Relief Effort from His Homeland

Donation Will Provide More than 1.4 Million Meals to Those in Need

MANILA - Manila native and Journey lead singer Arnel Pineda announced today that he, Journey and their team - promoter Live Nation Entertainment; Creative Artists Agency (CAA); and Manager John Baruck - are donating more than $350,000 USD to provide emergency food relief to people impacted by the recent super typhoon in the Philippines. These initial funds will help the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) provide Filipinos in urgent need of food assistance with more than 1.4 million meals.

"Don't stop believing, help is on the way for the people of the Philippines," said Arnel Pineda, who is leading the efforts to mobilize the coalition of partners. Pineda, based in Manila, plans to meet with World Food Programme's Executive Director Ertharin Cousin Saturday at WFP's Philippines headquarters in Manila to announce the donation.

The largest storm to ever make landfall, Super Typhoon Haiyan caused catastrophic damage, with more than 615,000 people displaced. When disaster strikes and hours can mean the difference between life and death, the UN World Food Programme is among the first on the ground to provide life-saving assistance.

Journey is calling on fans to join them and make urgent donations to support life-saving food relief for millions of Filipinos. Donations can be made at http://www.wfpusa.org/journey or by texting the word AID to 27722 to instantly donate $10.

WFP's efforts will ensure that 2.5 million people receive food, logistics and emergency telecommunications over the next six months. More than 170,000 people have received WFP rice rations to date, as part of family food packs from WFP handed out by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Aid is also beginning to reach more remote locations, with distributions of High Energy Biscuits made in 20 communities on Friday. Life-saving HEBs are used in emergencies because they are nutritious, light to transport and need no cooking.

Celebrating Halloween Filipino Style

Halloween in the Philippines is not like the Halloween in the Western countries. Although it’s a big holiday (comparable to Christmas here), we celebrate it in a different manner. Halloween in the Philippines lasts from the eve of October 31 (or even before this day) to November 2. Due to our strong Catholic background, Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 are spent remembering our dead loved ones and these dates will usually find most of us in one place only: the cemetery or the memorial park.

This is a hub on how the Filipinos celebrate their Halloween. No, we don’t celebrate it with pumpkins or trick-or-treats (although this Western tradition is sometimes practiced in some families / subdivisions here). We celebrate it through candles, flowers, prayers and a visit to the cemetery.
