A Message from the President

May & June have been busy for everybody, hard work but fun. A volunteer organization like ours requires help from everybody to be successful.

How often do we have a chance to show our cultural exhibits and share our costumes to our members and to others? Asian Pacific Islander Celebration sponsored by the Veterans Hospital both Nashville and Murfreesboro has selected Philippines as their featured country. The organization has been invited thru Ms. Irene Cepnio by having some Philippine exhibits and fashion show of Philippine costumes. With our mission of preserving and promoting our cultures and traditions, we took advantage of the opportunity. Our exhibits were limited but what we have significant meaning to our heritage. All that had seen our exhibits during the Celebration was very appreciative and remember their life in the Philippines especially the veterans who served during the war. The fashion show was also as exciting as the exhibits. Phil-Am Association from Columbia and Murfreesboro also participated in the celebration by providing the entertainment, music, folk dancing and food. The combined efforts of all the Phil-Am Association in Middle Tennessee shows how unified the Filipinos in the Nashville and suburban area.

June 2nd, PAAMT co-sponsored the International Friendship dinner with International Ministry of St. Stephen Catholic Community. Seven other country participated in the event and was well received by both the Filipino community and the St. Stephen parishioners. Different ethnic menu were served, music was provided by Sally Pledger, Philippine food: appetizers, main menu and deserts were donated by so many Filipino families. Thanks to Marylou Go, Johnny & Cora Villanueva, Willie & Irene Cepnio, Ed & Flor Pattawi ; Pete & Juliet Galvez; John & Cecile and Bong & Monina De Jesus. Their initiatives and helping hand makes the entire event successful. Everybody had a positive and favorable remarks of the evening.

Membership in our association is slowly increasing but not to my expectation. If you know of anybody who has not joined our association, encourage them to join now. Membership is one of the key element to success. Education is one of the goal I set up this year. This summer, we are going to sponsor free classes to all teens/youth who may be interested in learning Philippine cultures, traditions, geography and language. Ana Arnone has volunteered to teach the six week classes and it will be a Saturday morning session. Anybody who may be interested may contact Ms. Arnone at 615-769-5798 or may contact me at 615-275-8805. First come first serve, limited seating only, so call now. Plan for Senior citizens and Youth programs are being initiated right now but we want to know who you are. Call Myrna Manalac at 615-758-9480 if you are a senior citizen or if you know somebody and if you are a teen/youth, call Ina Flores at 615-758-0644. We need you name, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. We have a website, check it out for future events and news “philammidtn.com”. If you have any information or news to share, let us know. If you have any suggestions or new ideas, call us.

Happy Philippine Independence Day

Independence Day (Filipino: Araw ng Kasarinlan; also Araw ng Kalayaan, lit. "Day of Freedom") is an annual national holiday in the Philippines observed on 12 June, commemorating the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain on 12 June 1898. It is the country's National Day.

The declaration of Philippine independence from the Spanish colonial rule followed the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896. Philippine independence was not recognised either by the United States of America or by Spain. The Spanish government later ceded the Philippine archipelago to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris. The Philippine Revolutionary Government did not recognize the treaty. When the Americans sought to execute the terms of the treaty, a three-year conflict, now called the Philippine-American War, ensued. The US granted independence to the Philippines on 4 July 1946 through the Treaty of Manila 4 July, the date intentionally chosen by the United States because it corresponds to its Independence Day, was observed in the Philippines as Independence Day until 1962. On 12 May 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal issued Presidential Proclamation No. 28, which declared Tuesday, 12 June a special public holiday throughout the Philippines, "... in commemoration of our people's declaration of their inherent and inalienable right to freedom and independence." On 4 August 1964, Republic Act No. 4166 renamed the 4 July holiday as "Philippine Republic Day", proclaimed 12 June as "Philippine Independence Day", and enjoined all citizens of the Philippines to observe the latter with befitting rites. Prior to 1964, 12 June had been observed as Flag Day, which was moved to 28 May (the date the Philippine Flag was first flown in battle).
